Unsure if this is a bug or a feature that just hasn't been implemented yet for Mac, or if I'm just doing something wrong. I saw a Windows user drag and drop files, so I know it's possible! But is it going to be possible for Mac any time soon?

Drag and drop from file explorer is available on Mac and Windows. A bug has been fixed regarding this issue. Let me know, if it still doesn't works for you in the latest release.
